Ukiah gets a brother - Atticus. There's definitely a time burp in how they grew-up. Atticus is also choosing a gay lifestyle with his partner Ru.

The storyline was wrapped up with the cult in this book, and there aren't others. Still feels like there could be more with this series. Maybe in the future? ( )

And this book goes off in yet another different angle - for the first time, Ukiah is not the primary viewpoint character. He gets a few pages, but most of the story is from Atticus' viewpoint - Ukiah's "brother". And from his viewpoint, we get to see the very odd situation Ukiah is in - a fiance in the FBI and a family all on the Most Wanted list, for one thing. Poor Atticus - well, Ukiah got dropped into the middle of things about as much, but a) he took the mouse, so he didn't have to come to believe it - he just knew; and b) Ukiah is - was, at least - very young mentally. Children can accept a lot more weirdness than adults - and somehow Atticus managed to actually grow up, without having his secret discovered, in the human world. So he's a lot more adult, more "civilized", than Ukiah's gotten so far. And yet, for all the strange angles it has, Ukiah's seems to be more of a settled life - more of a family - than Atticus has ever managed. Aside from Ru, he doesn't seem to have anyone (Kyle is a co-worker more than a friend, let alone family). I want to see Atticus meeting Kitt! So the frame for that story is more of the cult - no, Core's end didn't just shut it down, the true believers went off at a new angle. And they still have two founts. Hex does lay long plans (reasonably). Good story on the action front, plus quite a bit of deep thought - from Ukiah, Atticus, and some of the cult members - about how the world really is and how beliefs have to change to match reality. And despite being basically from an outsider's viewpoint, we get to see pretty deeply into Indigo, too - Max to a lesser extent, he's still in the hospital. I wish there were more to the story - nothing else, as far as I know. ( )

Not a good place to start the series, but an excellent next installment if you've been following along. Another missing piece of Magic Boy's turned up - although if he can't pass the Pack test, he's not going to be around for long. With all the players on the board, no one really knows what anyone else is doing, and as the mad rush starts to stop the cultists and the aliens from killing every living thing on earth, all I can say is, hang on, it's a wild ride!
