It’s a quick read, still the author gave each kid a distinct personality and a little arc involving friendship or siblings or overcoming self-doubt. While I liked all the characters, Norrie was probably my favorite, she was kind of a lot at times which might annoy some readers but I found her overzealous behavior entertaining. I also really appreciated that things weren’t entirely predictable, a friendship issue didn’t resolve in the way I thought it might and the big horse show went a bit differently, too, in a good way. Victoria is new to Edgewood Stables and her riding skills catch Norrie and Hazel's attention. Turns out Victoria previously rode at Waverly, a higher-end stable. Norrie is determined to shun Victoria, but Victoria doesn't really care. After a falling out with a friend at Waverly, Victoria decides not to have any friends at Edgewood. But when you have horses in common with others, it's hard not to become friends. Horse-loving readers will enjoy the stable atmosphere and horse culture as experienced by characters who are peers. I was never really horse-mad, but I was definitely adjacent, and the things I really love about this book is that there is space for both. It's a great portrait of barn community -- from the obsessed, to the competitive, to those who are just happy to be outside with horses. It doesn't shy away from talking about the economics of thing (expensive!), or the common gender imbalance. I also love the way it portrays friendships, and the wonderful geeky fan community as well. "Victoria has always loved horses. But riding in competitions is high stakes, high stress, and shockingly expensive. And even though Victoria's best friend Taylor loves competing, Victoria has lost her taste for it. After a heartbreaking fight with Taylor, Victoria needs a new start--at a new stable. A place where she doesn't have to worry about anything other than riding. No competition, no drama, no friends. Just horses. Edgewood Stables seems ideal. There are plenty of horses to ride, and Victoria is perfectly willing to give the other riders the cold shoulder. But can she truly be happy with no friends?" --Page [4] of cover.
