De nadruk ligt in dit boek sterk op de beginperiode van Echnatons heerschappij: de jaren in Thebe. Redford was betrokken bij het Akhenaton Temple Project, een poging om de tienduizenden 'talalat' terug samen te voegen tot de tempels die ze oorspronkelijk vormden. Ook de zoektocht naar de juiste locatie van de tempels in Thebe krijgt de nodige aandacht.
Redford neemt de tijd om de historische context te schetsen, beknopt en helder, en in te zoemen om de meer bekende aspecten van Echnatons beleid: zijn religieuze hervorming en zijn buitenlandse politiek. Zijn pagina's over de godsdienst zijn verhelderend en maken duidelijk dat de farao eerder een dichter dan een religieus leider was. Reden ook dat zijn godsdienst hem nauwelijks overleefde.
