When Bridget's mom dies of cancer, she finds that her mom was using a drug that allowed her to switch conscienceless with her double in another reality. Convinced her mother is alive somewhere, she takes the drug trying to find her. Pretty decent. ( ) I loved this. It's like Dark Matter by Blake Crouch but female and better. It's about mother daughter relationships and grief, is sci-fi and thriller and multiverse assassins, it's a mother wound. I love the writing as well, Beukes has such an interesting way of putting things, millennial but make it literary. Bridget’s mom taught her to use dreamworm to visit alternate realities, but then Bridget grew up and decided it was fake. When her mom died, though, she found more dreamworm in her mom’s effects—and decided she had to go find her mom, who must have jumped out of her body to some other reality. Also, other people can jump realities, but they are not benign, nor are the effects of being jumped into. As with her other work, Beukes takes an idea that’s been done before but does it very differently, drawing our attention to the costs to the jumpees and the various ways in which lives can go wrong. Sometimes Beukes really works for me, and when it does, it's a five-star barnburner. But sometimes it doesn't quite work. This is one of those times. I found the story both confusing and disturbing. Of course it's meant to be disturbing, but I guess she's so good it is more disturbing than I can take. I have a strong allergy to horror, and this bordered on it for me. I'm sure some readers will have the barnburner reading experience, though. I just couldn't stick with it. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

"Twenty-four-year-old Bridge is paralyzed by choices: all the other lives she could have lived, the decisions she could have made. And now, who she should be in the wake of her mother's unexpected death. Jo was a maverick neuroscientist fixated on an artifact she called the "dreamworm" that she believed could open the doors to other worlds. It was part of Jo's grand delusion, her sickness, and it cost her everything, including her relationship with her daughter. But in packing up Jo's house, Bridge discovers Jo's obsession hidden amongst her things. And the dreamworm works, exactly the way it's supposed to, the way Bridge remembers from when she was a little girl. Suddenly Bridge can step into other realities, otherselves. In one of them, could she find out what really happened to her mother? What Bridge doesn't know is that there are others hunting for the dreamworm--who will kill to get their hands on it"-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
