1557 The History of the Popes (Volume XXXVI) From the German of the Late Ludwig, Freiherr von Pastor translated by E. F. Peeler (read 3 Apr 1980) This volume concludes the account of Benedict XIII and starts the account of Clement XIII. Much of the volume tells the dismal story of the destruction of the Jesuits in Portugal and in France. The Conclave of 1758 was participated in by 48 Cardinals out of the 58 Cardinals living. It began 15 May and Cardinal Carlo Rezzonico was elected 6 July: he had been born in Venice on 7 March 1693. ( )
