The best of the ex-pat memoirs because of the author's ability to observe and analyze the ways of the local people almost with an anthropologist's eye, yet constantly open to the ridiculous and with a humorous turn of phrase. She seems a person who would be extremely goof company: understanding, intelligent and able to entertain with her goof humored anecdotes. I read Extra Virgin a few years back and enjoyed it so when I spotted this on the library shelf I picked it up for holiday reading. Story of everyday life in Liguria from a British point of view. Mostly about trying to get the house reroofed, which makes it sound terribly boring, but it's jam packed with little details that bring the whole neighbourhood to life.
Non fiction and fiction at the same time really (this Observer article shows that she doesn't exactly tell it like it is (not a bad thing)). I liked it and would like to read more books like it. Annie Hawes' stories of her life in Italy are by the far the most down-to-earth and real and interesting of any that I've ever read. If you've never encounted Hawes, please have a look at "Extra Virgin" and work your way over here. Hawes doesn't patronize the people that she writes about, she loves and understands them, and, with time, the reader does too. She is by far the best guide to the real Italy and real Italians that I have encountered. And she's darn funny! Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
Englishwoman in Italy Annie Hawes isn't quiteas baffled by Ligurian life as she was when she first came to this land of hills and olive groves. But she is as surprised - and, often, delighted - by its strange twists and turns as she ever was . . . Annie is, after all, the proud owner of a hillside cottage (though its roof is about to fall in, thanks to the efforts of some hungry wood-beetle), while her neighbours are called the Spring Onions and believe that they are the rightful owners of a village called Goat Number One. Wooed in a charmingly unconventional way by local culinary star Ciccio - who first demonstrates his affection by inviting her to his vineyard to help mix up cow manure - Annie soon has an all-knowing local on hand to help. Still, being besieged by goats belonging to an (alleged) ex-marijuana-grower turned organic salami producer, and discovering a nearby village whose lands are jointly owned by a family of prostitutes and a bunch of priests does make her wonder.
