La joven George siempre ha veraneado en el pueblo de la costa bretona donde vive Gauvain. Ambos se conocen desde que eran niños. Con el tiempo, él se ha convertido en un tosco marinero que, en teoría, no debería interesar lo más mínimo a alguien como ella, parisina, universitaria y de buena familia. Sin embargo, una noche, los dos se dejarán llevar por una atracción tan poderosa que ignorará cualquier convención social y que, inevitablemente, los unirá en secreto para toda la vida.

La escritora Benoîte Groult, famosa entre otras cosas por su reivindicación de los derechos de la mujer, quiso en esta novela dar voz a un personaje femenino profundamente libre y, a través de él, recrear el lenguaje de la pasión y la sexualidad femenina. Al tener como protagonista a una mujer emancipada que narra su deseo y sus experiencias con toda claridad, un terreno tradicionalmente reservado a la visión masculina, la obra se convirtió en un escándalo cuando se publicó en los años ochenta. Sin embargo, hoy en día está considerada una de las grandes historias de amor de la narrativa francesa contemporánea.

In the preface chapter to this novel (which I read in the dutch translation) the author spends some time on some of the challenges she faced in the composition of the text:
How to name the fisherman in such a way that his wife will not recognize him but will convey to the reader the essence of the man as best a name can?
What words to use to put onto paper 'the pleasures of the flesh that may weigh so heavily on the heart'.
How to represent that act that is performed most widely on Earth as something fascinating? Or why write about it, if it's not fascinating?

Fortunately for us, the reader, she did not refrain from writing this text, she did find the words, both the down-to-water / salt-of-the-water fisherman and the snobby feministic scholarly Parisienne have found their names (Gauvain Lozerech, GeorgeWithoutTheS), and we get to read their story, to witness their lifelong affair, and it is fascinating, and the language in which it is done is poetic. In short it's a joy to read.

שני ניסים. גם גמרתי שני ספרים באותו חודש וגם ספר שהוא אירוטי, רומנטי, רגיש ואינטליגנטי ועוד נכתב בידי אישה. מכיל את קטע הביקורת על ארה"ב הטוב ביותר שקראתי אי פעם. ( )

Ik weet niet goed hoe ik mijn reactie op dit boek best kan beschrijven. Ik kan niet zeggen dat het me koud laat, absoluut niet. Alleen al het feit dat ik een hartsgrondige hekel heb gekregen aan George vertelt me dat het boek me geraakt heeft, maar ik ben er ook niet wild van.Ik kan absoluut geen begrip opbrengen voor 'George ZonderS'. De manier waarop zij met deze relatie omgaat schreeuwt uit dat Gauvain niet goed genoeg is voor haar dat zij niets dan lust en tijdelijke verliefdheid kan opbrengen voor die man. Ik begrijp haar excuses absoluut niet en Groult slaagt er ook niet in om ze begrijpelijk te maken in mijn ogen. Het is moeilijk om een relatie tussen twee verschillende werelden gaande te houden, maar met liefde en doorzettingsvermogen lukt dat. De scènes waarin George zich amper over haar walging voor Disney kan zetten, ondanks het feit dat Gauvain dit nu wel eens leuk vindt, doen me gruwelen. Dit is geen liefde, dit is een verhaaltje van een geletterde vrouw die zich verveelt in haar eigen leven een een welwillend slachtoffer zoekt.
Misschien niet het beste boek dat ik ooit gelezen heb, maar Groult is er toch maar in geslaagd me enorm kwaad te krijgen. ;) ( )
