Friends are used to challenging themselves for not living up to their principles; the purpose of the 1984 Swarthmore lecture is to ask questions about the principles themselves, and to state the position of someone who finds it hard to accept the Quaker testimony on nonviolence because it seems to him politically timid, and of someone who cannot accept the austere moral earnestness of Quakerism because it seems to her closed to the delight of experiencing the world in its richness.

Thomas Hardy and his readers: A Selection of Contemporary Reviews, edited by Laurence Lerner and John Holmstrom (read 22 Jul 1972) This was fun reading though I recognized that it was ephemeral, and acknowledged it would be more worthwhile to read more thoughtful and considered studies of Hardy. I concluded it was fortunate that some of the censorious reviewers did not live to our time, since they'd have been horrified at the stuff being published now, illustrating the truth of the maxim that when one can't stand the times anymore one'll gain surcease thru death.… (més)
