"Explore[s] how archives are using the web to reach and interact with users, old and new, as well as to serve their own management needs. Thirteen case studies illustrate archival practitioners' own experiences in creating blogs, wikis, and interactive websites, and contributing to sites such as Flickr, YouTube, Wikipedia, and Second Life ... In addition, a series of short essays present the viewpoints of some of the primary users of archives -- historians, educators, students, and genealogists. The volume concludes with a group of reflections on the larger implications of social media for archives"--P. [4] of cover.… (més)

A useful overview of the current state of archival thought on the use of Web 2.0 technologies. The volume is a mixture of practical case studies, covering drivers, challenges and lessons learnt from a variety of technological implementations alongside more reflective essays on the significance to the profession of these new capabilities.

Non-archivists are given a voice, too, with historian Robert B. Townsend giving his perspective as a user and funder of archives and Jeffrey W. McClurken explaining his perception as a teacher of history undergraduates. These were two of the most interesting essays for me, as they come from outside of the 'Archives 2.0' bubble and made me realise that although we seem to have come a long way, there are still important and fairly basic steps that have yet to be taken (persistent URLs for archival resources being a prime example).
