In 1892 Paris, Julius Stewart painted The Baptism, a Vanderbilt family scene that contains an embarrassing secret. In the present day, art historian Grace Atwood becomes obsessed with the painting and its hidden clues for reasons that have more to do with her personal ghosts. This story showed all the promises of dedicated research and truthful interpretations of what might have been. Well written and intriguing from the first chapter and I really enjoyed this book! While no one knows the full truth, this story will captivate you and leave you mystified wanting to continue the endeavor too. ( )

I loved having the article accompany the novel. Both told the same story but the article showed what is known. In the novel, the present story seemed a light aside without much effort (except for the amazing capacitor exposition) from writer nor reader. The past story was well developed, well written, plausible and satisfying. I received this as a LibraryThing Member GiveAway. Thank you. ( )

I am not a gusher...but i just may break my own rule and do so for this book, Bonfire of the Vanderbilts. I can NOT say enough about how well written it is. I've liked this author for awhile now, but THIS book takes the literary cake!
Generations have questioned the meaning of the painting THE BAPTISM by Julius Stewart so plan on joining the ranks...it's that intriguing.
A mystery within a mystery with a setting that goes between the present day and the late 1800's. It's not a book you can fly through, there is a lot to absorb so take your time..the author keeps the reader immensely interested so no sweat.

( i actually loved how the author inserted his own character in the writing by the way ) ( )
