Hearing Doty speak to the host of On Being Krista Tippet, sparked my interest in his book. The podcast interview touched on his personal story of a dysfunctional family of origin and difficult childhood then outlined a bit of how the trajectory of his life changed. I wanted to know more. I enjoyed Doty's memoir. Weaving together his childhood experience at the magic shop in Lancaster, California where he met an unexpected teacher, and his adult life as a neurosurgeon, Doty outlines the "magic tricks" of mindfulness — relaxing the body, clearing the mind, opening the heart, setting intentions. The medical research that now backs up what was once considered woo-woo, or easter mysticism was especially interesting. "When our brain changes, we change. But an even greater truth is that when our heart changes, everything changes. And that change is not only in how we see the world but in how the world sees us. And in how the world responds to us." 151 Ressenya escrita per a CrÃtics Matiners de LibraryThing . Change your brain, change your life. But back then his life was at a dead endâ??until at the age of twelve when he wandered into a magic shop looking for a plastic thumb. There he met Ruth, a woman who taught him a series of exercises to ease his own suffering and manifest his greatest desires. Her final mandate was that he keep his heart open and teach these techniques to others. Ruth gave Doty his first glimpse of the unique relationship between the brain and the heart.Doty would go on to put Ruth's techniques to work, bringing power and wealth that he could only imagine as a twelve-year-old. But he neglects Ruth's most important lesson, to keep his heart open, with disastrous resultsâ??until he has the opportunity to make a spectacular charitable contribution that will virtually ruin him.Part memoir, part science, part inspiration, and part practical instruction, Into the Magic Shop shows us how we can fundamentally change our lives by first changing our brains and our h No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
