This was a roller coaster ride of espionage, assignations, spies, agents, royalty, and more! I will admit I stayed a bit confused by all the characters and trying to remember who was who and who did what, but it all turned out in the end.

This is a fantastic thriller that keeps you guessing until the end. Great ending to a great series.

This is Christian fiction and a thread of faith is throughout the book, but not preachy. No bad language or sexual inappropriateness. ( )

Thanks to the publisher and Lone Star Lit for providing me with an advanced copy of the book.

DiAnn Mills does a wonderful job at creating compelling, complex characters and her book High Treason is no exception.. CIA operative Monica Alden is compassionate, complex, intuitive and deeply rooted in her faith - an agent with a lot of heart and smarts. Her presence is definitely challenged by FBI special agent Kord Davidson, who is loyal to his Saudi friends and dedicated to figuring out who is behind the assassination attempt - on his own. Of course, sparks fly, but Mills keeps the tension between them high while remaining true to the inspirational nature of her writing. (Read: she keeps it clean.)

Having a CIA operative working on a case where the primary characters involved live in a very patriarchal society could have been tricky but the author handles it deftly. Monica is frustrated but works the situation with respect for their traditions and with intelligence, not letting ego get in the way of doing her job, and in the process gains their respect (and maybe even an admirer!) She balances out the tension with sharp wit that I quite appreciated.

The story is fast paced and gripping, and the characterization felt authentic. I could feel the angst that the secrecy of keeping her CIA life undercover from family and friends caused Monica; the tension and distrust of her presence as shown by Ali and other members of the Prince's staff was palpable.

As I noted briefly above, High Treason crosses genres between mystery, suspense, romance, and inspirational. Faith definitely plays a more prominent role in this book versus other inspirational novels I've read of late. The religious differences between Prince Omar and his family and staff are handled respectfully, and Monica's faith is recognized by them and appreciated - something that is nice to see given the current environment. Monica's faith is something that drives her, while Kord is a self-declared agnostic, hoping to find something to believe in. His conversion felt a bit sudden and awkward, but didn't detract from the pace of the story.

While the third entry in her FBI Task Force series, this book works as a stand-alone - although, honestly, I would LOVE to see Monica Alden and Kord Davidson working together to solve more cases. I really adored Monica's character and hated to see her story end.

This was a book that once picked up, I couldn't put it down - I may have read it in one sitting and I have the piles of laundry and dishes to prove it. (I don't regret it, either!) If you are a fan of Sandra Brown or Heather Graham and appreciate a taut mystery (with a clean romance), you need to check out DiAnn Mills and High Treason. ( )

High Treason is a book that will keep you reading. FBI Special Agent Kord Davidson and CIA operative Monica Alden find themselves tasked with protecting Saudi Prince Omar bin Talal. This becomes more complicated when they find out that the prince is not just there for him mother's cancer treatment, but also to negotiate some some stronger business ties between the US and his country.
I really enjoyed reading this book and liked seeing the interaction between the main characters. They had to learn to get over each other's role in the protective detail and learn to work together. I liked seeing how they worked out their differences as well as trying to figure out who the bad guy was and what the motive was.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher, the review is my own. ( )

Monica Alden, a CIA operative, is brought onto an FBI task force with Special Agent Kord Davidson after an assassination attempt on Kord's friend, a Saudi prince. Having come to Houston, Texas to seek cancer treatment for his mother, the prince can't pick up and leave the country, but the extent of his real plans in the US makes his FBI protection all the more crucial in High Treason, a novel by author DiAnn Mills.

With this book, I knew I'd have to settle in for a read that would take me a while. But as I've come to find with this author so far, no matter how long or short the read, there's not a dull moment in it for me. Whether it's high-stakes action, the thick of investigation, or engaging inward and outward dialogue as characters deal with their personal challenges and forge various relationships, I'm kept on my toes from start to finish.

I'm all for a heroine like Monica: sharp, no-nonsense, gutsy, and driven, but with a sense of humor, compassion, and a vulnerable side. I also appreciate that her inner conflict has complexity to it, that it's not just a token pain or a too-easy source for angst or drama.

And Kord is rather sharp himself. While I'm pretty sure the "missionary setup" will never be my preferred scenario for ChristFic romance (it tends to muddy up the couple's motives and makes the inevitable conversion feel trite, contrived, or both), I do like that the romance here isn't instantaneous or dripping with sap. The characters' tenderness doesn't make them lose their edge but rather enhances it.

Since this is only the third book I've read by Mills, it may be too soon to say she's my favorite romantic suspense author. Even so, I'm kind of scratching my head as to why I haven't read more of her books by now.
