Many children experience divorce and hide away their emotions. Azmaira Maker’s Family Changes invites them to examine and question how they feel, through the story of a little rabbit whose parents are divorcing. The meanings of separation and divorce, the child’s feeling that it must be her fault, and the longing to make things right again are all given special prominence. But this is a fairytale of magic balls and feathers too, with pleasing bunny characters as well as a serious message. A fairytale with no fairytale ending perhaps, though Zoey learns that she can ask her questions, and there just might be answers that don’t make her stomach hurt.

An introductory page for parents and a list of sample questions at the back complete the package, making the book a good tool for families experiencing divorce, as well as an enjoyable, innocent read.
