Also, it becomes monotonous when you’re forever reading one side of a conversation. It’s like hearing someone on the phone: you only have one side of the story.
My main purpose in reading this was to glean info on the Affair of the Poison, especially anything relating to the Marquise de Brinvilliers. What bit there is on the marquise I’ve already read elsewhere. I’d hoped for more in this volume.
Madame was without doubt a fine writer, though, and it’s wonderful that her correspondence has been preserved for posterity. We get an insight into her life and times, and Madame’s adoration of her daughter is touching.
Anyone more familiar than I am with Madame's friends and the events that took place during her life will most probably find this a great read. (
