I like to buy self help books on occasion but as soon as I sit down and start reading I get overwhelmed with all the blah blah blah and donate the book to the public library. This book is nice because it keeps it to seven words and explains why the words we use matter and how we frame things for ourselves with those words matter. There was nothing new here mind you, but the way it is presented breaks it down without all the b.s. and offers the reader moments for reflection. The book is a wonderful reminder to stop being so harsh on myself and break free of brutal self criticism and do the things I'd like to do, enjoy doing and enjoy my life as well as be thoughtful and kinder with others in my life. I did not find any new or novel ideas in her book but could see how some people, perhaps certain women, may find this book helpful to them if they have had similar life experiences as Kemp; including the prevalent depression, self-doubt, and perfectionism experiences that many women feel who are in a certain demographic or faith culture in the United States. I also found that her references/notes on how she came up with the 7 words were lacking in diversity because at least 20% of her references were taken from her faith background as a Mormon or seemed to be based on popular new age and psychology trends in positive mindfulness and manifestation practices from notable names such as; Brene Brown, Eckhart Tolle, Esther Hicks, Stephen Covey, etc., just to name a few. I feel like she took some positive psychology, universal truths on successful living and mindset, as well as popular quotes from notable people and just blended them into her experiences and 7 words that start with "A" to have a convenient way to sell a book as a speaker/life coach.
I would not recommend this book to others and feel that it is only helpful for people who want a life coach to tell them how to be successful when they can find these universal truths in many other sources and from more notable people without paying for this book or her life coaching. I'm giving this a 1 star and feel like it is in the category of the lower quality self-help and self-published books that are popping up nowadays without adequate vetting that a quality publisher would provide so that books like this never hit shelves. This is probably a book that would sell in a Christian bookstore but I doubt will be widely accepted in other literary circles. Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . My copy is a beautiful hardbound book--using lots of floral imagery throughout. (Personally, every once in a while when I would glance at the typewriter, I would see it as a "sugar skull".)The main idea is self-talk--which is not a new concept. What you say to yourself; what you think. This author has developed a cyclical concept (with 7 keywords all starting with the letter A) to use as a framework for changing your self-talk (and hopefully improving your life by doing so). Along the way, she shares some of her own story--her own journey from negative self-talk to a more beautiful life. This book was sent to me via LibraryThing's Early Reviewers Program which asks for an honest review in return. Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . I received the book, “The Word Effect” through the LibraryThing's Early Reviewers programme. The book is beautifully crafted: Lovely cover design and finish to the dust jacket, easy to follow layout, pleasant spot illustrations through out the book. Author Becky Jane Kemp explores the concept of positive change through language. Becky's personal examples expand on the key words: Acknowledge, Ask, Accept, Abundance, Action, Appreciate and Aspire. Well thought out, “The Word Effect” is certainly a book for those looking to achieve a mindful positive life. Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . As I have started to read this book it has become a new way of thinking for me. It helps to see things in a new light and I cannot wait to read on and apply some of these tactics to my everyday life!Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
