A young and beautiful princess is in the forest one day playing with her golden ball when it falls into a deep well. As she cries, a frog wanders up, offering to help her get the ball in exchange for being taken back to her castle where they will be companions for life. Though she tries to lose him once she receives her ball, the frog finds her at her castle, and the King makes her keep his promise. In an angry moment, the Princess flings the frog across the room, only to have him change from a frog into a handsome Prince. ( )

I had mixed feelings about this book after reading it. I liked the language used throughout the text. The language used not only aided in developing the time period, but also contributed a rhythmic flow. For example, the text begins "In days of old when wishing still made things so". In addition, the frog also has a key phrase that he continues to rhyme and repeat through out the story. However, there was also attributes I did not like about this story. Although there are many story lines to the Princess and the frog, I did not like overall outcome in the plot. In this particular story, the princess smashes the frog into the wall before he becomes a prince. I much rather prefer the gentle kiss. I believe the big idea within this story is to never judge a book by their cover. The ugly, slimy toad turned out to be a handsome prince with beautiful eyes. ( )

Wargin, Kathy-Jo. (2007). The frog prince. Ann Arbor, MI: Mitten Press.
The artwork really make this book unique. The illustrations have so much detail and depth. You can see every blade of grass and every jewel on the Princess. The story is centered around a beautiful Princess and an ugly frog (whom she lifts distainfully with two fingers). Princess loses her precious golden ball, Frog offers to retrieve it for her if she will promise to take him home forever. Her father, the King, forces her to keep her promise. Eventually frog turns into Prince and they get married. Very predictable for children, with rhyming verses the frog recites when she continues to break her promises to him.

The classis fairytale of the frog prince, and mmeeting the ungrateful princess who onle wants to gain for herself and not from the helpful frog who will then turn into a price. The art work is beatuiful, and makes story seem like a real fairytale from long ago.
