Very, very mixed reactions to this. It's a present-day repackaging of the Anna Karenina story set in Ireland, and it's surprisingly as clever as it ought to be and works well (I know it sounds like a dreadful premise). Another strong positive was the way that the author used an omniscient narrator that only was only in the mood to share its omniscient knowledge somewhat randomly so you would get these unexpected flashes of information and the whole thing was so strategically done, I was super impressed. On to the negatives ... again with the mockery of world of arts and letters -- a lot of snide caricatures that are a little embarrassing to read because you get the impression that the author finds them scandalously biting and they're not at all. The adultery angle, which is clearly going to play a significant role due to the whole premise of the thing, is also more than a little tiresome, and makes it painfully obvious that Ireland hasn't had the divorce for that long because it would appear that it still strikes people as a very poignant and hand-wringy situation.
Grade: B+ Recommended: You know, I am complaining but all my complaints are pretty nitpicky and this would most likely be more than satisfactory for people interested in contemporary Irish fiction and also fans of Anna Karenina. ( )

Vědela ale, že to nemůže udělat. Nefungovalo by to. Při pohledu na tu scenerii byla šťastná, ale kdyby tu zůstala po celé hodiny a koupala se v té kráse, nebyla by šťastnější. Kdysi, ještě v dospívání, věřila, že to tak musí být: že když na ni nějaký pohled hluboce zapůsobí, pak čím déle na místě zůstane, tím hlouběji se jí ten zážitek vtiskne do duše, a když vydrží dost dlouho, dosáhne stavu výjimečného štěstí. Nemyslím na nic jiného nežli na něj.
