Todo el mundo está convencido de que la pequeña Mickey Carlyle -secuestrada hace siete años y cuyo cadáver nunca se halló- está muerta y que hay un hombre en la cárcel cumpliendo condena por su asesinato. Todo el mundo excepto el inspector Vincent Ruiz de la policía londinense, quien no acaba de creerse que todo sea tan sencillo. Politie-inspecteur Vincent Ruiz ontsnapt op een haar na aan de dood. Op een avond vissen zijn collega’s hem nauwelijks levend uit het koude water van de Theems. Ruiz kan zich niet herinneren hoe hij daar terecht is gekomen. Zijn enige aanwijzing is een foto die hij bij zich droeg, een foto van een meisje dat drie jaar geleden is verdwenen. Hoewel de vermeende dader achter slot en grendel zit, werd Mickeys lichaam nooit gevonden. Ruiz denkt dat ze nog in leven is en dat hij Mickey op de avond van zijn ongeluk probeerde vrij te krijgen.
Niemand gelooft hem, behalve psycholoog Joe O’Loughlin. Samen proberen ze te reconstrueren wat er is gebeurd, zodat Mickey gevonden en veilig thuisgebracht kan worden.

A long while back I read #4 in this series. I liked it a lot and have no clue why I didn't start with #1 or even read another in the series. My brother reminded me about the series recently and that's why I came back. Not leaving now. One thing that I really liked about this book is the plot trick. It starts in the middle with the guy waking up with amnesia and progresses as he remembers. It was very effectively used here with a strong story that I enjoyed a lot. ( )

This second book was better in some ways such as the main character was not as morally corrupt as Joe. I'm also happy to state that this book only had one completely unnecessary incident of gratuitous objectification of a female character. I am glad that at least the author toned down his view of women in this book. But sadly, the story itself wasn't as interesting as the first book. It was a bit all over the place and it wasn't clear why the MC was pretty much the only decent cop around. Reminded me a bit of why I get annoyed with Bosch books sometimes. I don't know if I'll continue with the series. It did keep my interest when I was reading it but I wasn't in a rush to pick it back up. ( )
