Joolz's second of four novels and of the three I've read (still haven't got round to Borrowed Light) my personal favourite. A treatise on betrayal and insecurity and how low it can take you but how you never really give up hope of meeting somebody you can trust, however obscure that somebody is (in this case a spritual cult to cut a long story short!). One of those rare books where I didn't just empathise with the narrator but actually feel, but for the grace of the goddess, that could be you. A priveleged background and intellectual rigour does not necessarily a happy person make. A clever look at what makes a person look for something deeper, something more spritual, at how there are so many charlatons out there ready to prey on the vulnerable and how actually the great god of Mammon always gets in the way, everyone needs money, even sprituality but the money is the power that corrupts the ideal. Nice theory about syphilis and genius in there as well! Anyway, a bloody brilliant read! Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
"When her marriage falls apart, Alma turns to the the two people she can always depend on: the Ems. To the outside world she's strong and single-minded, but Millie and Maz know better - get past the piercings and the attitude and the real Alma's lonely, desperate for love and nursing old wounds. This time, though, Al needs more than her friends can offer and she has to run from the painful memories Bradford holds." "At her parents' villa in Spain a chance encounter with members of the mysterious CDS Foundation changes Al's life forever. Condemned by the locals as a cult, the Foundation seems to offer her a spiritual haven at first: the students are bright, open and accepting, the atmosphere a million miles from the heartache and betrayal of her old life." "But under the surface lurks a sinister reality. What do the Foundation leaders expect from their students? What really goes on at their gatherings? And what price will Al have to pay for witnessing the horrific truth?"--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This was a reasonable read but got somewhat over excited near the end as we blundered to the conclusion. ( )
