A charming memoir of life as a student nurse in the NHS, this would be a fun read for anyone who has done nursing training or education. Andrews writes of in-hospital training in London, UK in the 1960’s, with all its many rules and regulations, different belts for different levels of training, long terrifying night shifts and long dreary day shifts.
It’s interesting for me, as a university educated nurse, to see how training was done in the hospitals. To be honest, I’m a bit envious. We seemed to never get enough practice to feel competent before graduation, but maybe that was just me. Nursing has become more complex since the 60’s, too, with sicker patients needing more highly technically trained staff to look after them.
Still, this was an enjoyable trip down memory lane, and anyone who remembers giving that first shot will enjoy the ride along.
