Doesn't reinvent the wheel but if you're in the mood for Witcher-like monster hunters, coming of age, a bit of training montage, and a f/f mentor/trainee relationship it's quite alright.

Despite a slow start “The Rot Beneath” soon gathered speed and didn’t slow down until the last page. Even then Eli Freysson has left the prospect of another adventure looming for the mismatched group of investigators with this book being number one in the “Days of the Watcher” series. The difference to other series, however, is this novel can be read as a standalone or you can continue to enjoy the series. “The Rot Beneath” is a classic murder mystery that also contains themes of classism, racism, terrorism and explores human sacrifice and cults. People are disappearing from the streets of Fluvi, a city that bears a striking resemblance to industrial revolution London, and no one seems to notice except for newspaperman, Sam Todd. Doggedly persistent, he and a group of loyal friends follow vague clues to discover the cause. It’s nothing less than a plot from a Lovecraft novel. I spent time I didn’t have reading Freysson’s novel and I still don’t regret one minute of it. A highly recommended read.… (més)

3.5 rounded up to 4 It is quite hard to rate a short story serial and I've only read the first of Eleven so far, each of the eleven stories featuring on a different Character.

So what can I tell you about this one well the space battle is incredibly well done and you can feel the history of the world bleeding through the pages and you can't help but get behind Beren a Likeable MC to cheer on.Only minor thing which didn't work for me were all this number and classes for weapons but this might just be me as I'm not used to reading space operas and just as I was getting into the story it finished.

I look forward to the next Instalment of the series

I liked this one. Plot-wise, I thought it started a bit slow as we were given a lot of information about the main character and the ancient order that she's training to be a part of. But it didn't take long to get moving. The training with her mentor was well done. It really showed off Katja's personality. There was a good bit of action as we went through the book. There were sword fights, demon summoning, and some magic thrown in. I also liked that even though it's part of a series, there was a good ending to this one. We weren't left hanging.… (més)
