Though lumber drying is only one of many processes that a piece of wood goes through from the time it leaves the stump until it becomes a chair leg, more energy is used in this process than any of the others. Approximately .5 kWh of electrical and 2500 Btu (.7 kWh) of thermal energy is used in drying each board foot of furniture grade lumber. For construction grade lumber such as pine 2 x 4's, less electrical energy but more thermal energy is needed. The total thermal energy used in drying lumber in the United States per year is approximately 10^14 Btu. Though drying conditions vary with different woods (drying temperatures vary from 110 to 240 F), the process is basically the same for all kiln drying. For this reason, the kiln industry as a whole will be very interested in a solar heated kiln experiment.
The particular kiln facility that was used in designing the solar heating system presented herein, includes two modern side-by-side horizontal flow kilns. The facility is owned by the J.A. LaCour Kiln Service, Inc., and is located in a Canton, Mississippi, industrial park which contains many other wood related industries (furniture making, telephone poles, pulpwood, etc.) and about ten other kilns. Canton is located 20 miles north of Jackson, Mississippi, and is easily reached by commercial airlines and a 30 minute auto trip.
The design configuration selected consists of 2,500 sq ft of collectors and is a "sawtooth" arrangement with reflectors. The heat transfer and storage medium is water with a storage capacity of 40,000 lbm. Heat is transferred to the kiln air by means of fin pipe heat exchangers in the kiln. The controls for the solar heating systems can provide heat to either kiln or both simultaneously. However, it is planned to operate only one kiln on solar energy during most of the test period for a side-by-side comparison with a fossil fueled kiln. This system will provide 44% of the energy requirements of one kiln at the pro-posed site in Canton, 40% in Omaha, and 54% in Albuquerque.… (més)
