Into the Twilight, Endlessly Grousing

on writing humor

McManus knows just the right twist to turn a story from an innocent recitation to a hilarious, eye-watering, belly laughing tale.

For sheer fun, there's nothing like a McManus story. We read these aloud at family gatherings, and we all end up laughing to tears!

While leading a would-be killer into the open, Sheriff Bo Tully also pursues a seventy-five-year-old missing persons case in which a pair of gold miners (a two-man drilling team known as a double-jack) mysteriously disappeared just as they hit the mother lode in a remote part of Blight County.

This was an easy and quick read with mildly amusing characters. I might try another if I want something light.

I love Patrick McManus and his humor. The only problem with this collection is that it's more of the same mix of slapstick stories and self-effacing Benchley-style essays. If you haven't read McManus, this is a perfectly fine place to start. It doesn't matter if you have absolutely no interest in or knowledge about outdoor sports.½

Slow starting but the usual good stories.

As with a lot of collections of essays, this one is a bit irregular. Some of the selections had me laughing out loud and others, meh. But overall, this is a fun collection. The parts about his childhood were the best in my opinion.

Fourth one I've read in the series and I needn't say more than to say it's as good as the others with amusing characters, an interesting mystery, and a fun way to spend an afternoon.

This is a marvelous series: delightful characters, humor, a decent mystery. What more could you ask for.

Sheriff Bo Tully is off to collect huckleberries so his mother can bake him some pies when he meets three hysterical women who have discovered three bodies. There are three hard looking men in town worth investigating. And a local wife who insists her ex-husband has been murdered. Because the bodies were found on federal land, the FBI sends an agent to verify that the investigation is done properly. She soon falls under the spell of doing things the "Blight" way. There's also some raft poling. :)

Series keeps getting better.
