I don't know what I was expecting when I grabbed this, thinking, "Maybe this will help me finally understand some of the parts of the NGE anime and movies that I don't get!" I mean, same author...it's really just a doubling down, so far, on exactly what I saw on screen. Maybe the later issues will be more helpful.

I did appreciate the little "author's note" at the end, which gave a little weird glimpse into Hideaki Anno's brain. It actually did sort of explain some things, though not in the way he intended, I think. "I feel I am being irresponsible." Ok, then.½

It's kind of a weird experience reading a story set in a post-apocalyptic 2015, when it is 2015 in reality and we didn't have a global cataclysm at the turn of the millenium. Ignoring the obvious dissonance between the fictional and alternate realities, the story of giant robots battling alien angels is one which I am less interested in now as I was in high school (when anything anime was a novelty) and I first watched some episodes of the series and added this book to my reading list. Technically, it's a good story as far as mecha-based anime goes, since the focus is less about the post-apocalyptic world and robot battles and more about the character development of the young pilots, but I still don't really have any interest in pursuing the entire series.

He aquí un delicioso artbook de Evangelion con imágenes muy icónicas de los protagonistas de la serie, a todo color y algunas incluso a página completa. Material clásico y fundamental para los fanáticos de este anime, para leerlo y releerlo.

Shinji is being picked up when an alarm sounds in Toyko 3 due to a onster attacking. A giant robot, Eva, is fighting the monster piloted by Rei. This book is set into 6 stages, which seems like chapters to me. Shinji's father wants him to piolet the Eva insead of Rei and eventually he does.

Whew! What an exhilarating read. I've been a fan of the anime for quite some time and I think it's a hot mess, but glorious and stunning in its own way. Reading this manga was a pleasure and I feel it's certainly different enough from the anime to warrant a read through for fans.

This manga seemed to make a little more sense to me than the anime. Maybe it was because I could take my time digesting the ideas, or maybe it's the simple difference between the two different art forms? Who knows.

The idea of the Human Instrumentality Project attempting to create a "perfect" world by taking away pain and suffering without realizing the pain and pleasure is what makes life worth living and frankly, makes life - life. There's a line from Shinji where he says something like "It doesn't feel bad, but it's not good, either." That kind of sums it up for me. You need bad and good to make up a whole of experiences in life. Bad stuff sucks, but it needs to be there to make the good that much better. (...or something like that....) Highly reccommended.

Really great manga version of the famous anime. I re-watched the series recently and thought I'd give this manga version a try. The anime is fast and furious so it's really nice to be able to slowly savor the story in manga form. It appears there are five "3-in-1" volumes to this and I'll be sure to read them all. Maybe reading this manga will help me actually make sense out of the story..... ;-)

Excellent manga telling of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime. As previously stated in my Volume 1 review, it's great to savor the story.

This volume has a lot more characterization for Shinji than last volume, which makes sense, as this volume adapts the chunk of the show where Shinji runs away from piloting the Eva for the first time. The volume also lays the ground work for what could (and in the show will) become Shinji's support group. The show paces this a little differently then the manga, but I think the story doesn't suffer from the change of pacing.

Indeed, the only change that the adaptation really suffers for is that this storyline is where we first get the use of the train-car image. Later on in the show, when Shinji is having some particularly traumatic moments, in his head he retreats to the train car from this episode, and basically hashes things out with psychological representations of other characters. This becomes even more of a thing once we get to Instrumentality at the end of the show, as was basically spend a not inconsiderate chunk of the last two episodes - in the broadcast release, and the last episode in End of Eva - in the Traincar of Therapy with Shinji trying put his thoughts on his place in the world, and his relationships with people into some resemblance of shape.

The loss of the train car sequence here kind of makes me wonder what [a:Yoshiyuki Sadamoto|164714|Yoshiyuki Sadamoto|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1274725162p2/164714.jpg] will use in its place in later volumes of the series.

This volume of the manga adapts the Operation Yashima plotline, which I'd also describe as the "First Rei Arc." It gives the reader a baseline for who Rei is currently, so her character can develop and change over future volumes.

The story in this volume is missing some of the light humor that the anime version of this arc has (with Rei being the ultimate straight woman - particularly when Rei comes to give Shinji the briefing on Operation Yashima while he's in the hospital).

Sadamoto's art is excellent, and the problems I had tracking some of the action scenes in manga form in volume 1 are completely absent here.

So, we haven't had the Quantum Reis (Ree?) showing up during some of the characters death scenes. So, I wonder, when we have Third Impact, will the characters who have died before Third Impact formally begins (Misato, Gendo, Kaji) contributing to Shinji's self analysis, or will we be limiting ourselves to characters who are still alive, like Kensuke & Asuka.

Man, Shinji & Asuka can't catch a break. This time Asuka gets saved from death (a death that got played in the movie a lot like a rape) at the hands of the Mass Production Evas by Shinji, and Shinji gets his one triumphant moment where he manages to save someone, only for the trigger to get pulled on Third Impact anyway.

Also, poor Maya. She finds what is potentially a great job, with a boss she greatly admires in Ritsuko, to the point of falling for her, only to discover that Ritsuko is morally compromised, the giant robots she's helping to maintain are horrific monsters (leading to at least two occasions where she tosses her cookies), and Lilith sends her almost-but-not-quite-incorporeal-enough hand through Maya, which I have no doubt would have been a horrific sensation.

I've got to say, though, Ritsuko getting the last laugh by shooting Gendo through the throat was quite satisfying. If the characters who have died aren't going to get to join the Great Link in Third Impact, then I'd consider Gendo's death to be justice. Though again, if the characters who died don't get to join the Great Link, then I'd say that Misato & Kaji deserved far better - even if they don't get to come back out afterwards, then I'd say that they at least earned eternity together - but that's my inner romantic talking.

This volume adapts what I'd describe as the "First Asuka Arc", with Asuka's arrival at Tokyo 3, and the "dance fight".

Asuka's characterization is slightly different from the anime, as she acts like much more like a bully problem child, putting on a goody-two-shoes air in front of the adults, but a much more abusive face when they're not looking. It makes for a different take on the character. Whether it's one for the better I'll have to see.

Also, all the problems with how Sadamoto draws the fights are completely gone in this volume. The dance fight is one that, in the wrong hands, could have failed horribly, but here it just works. That said, it also is lessened a little bit by the fact that we don't have the music, which would really help. That said, I mentally went with "Dance of the Hours" by Amilcare Ponchielli.

Good start to the series. I particularly like the changes that [a:Yoshiyuki Sadamoto|164714|Yoshiyuki Sadamoto|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1274725162p2/164714.jpg] made to Shinji for the manga version. I've kind of realized that certain character personalities work better as written characters (whether in prose fiction or in sequential art), and others work better in motion mediums (like anime or live action film). The characterization changes just work better here.

The one complaint I have is that I lose track of the action in some of the action sequences, particularly when the military is attempting to stop the Angel in its first attack (and failing).

I don't know. This story is so ingrained in me as an early anime I saw. Reading the manga was interesting. Still processing.

2007 Review:

after watching the anime, I thought it was time to read the manga. A series as full of hopelessness and despair as the creator was during his 4 year mental breakdown. Rejects and castoffs trying to save the world. All hope and optimism are gone. I am going to try to read up to the current volume[#9 I believe]. Depends on if the local libraries have them or not.

This one starts off slow with character building, but the story really stays to get interesting in the last volume of this collection.

In the future angels are attacking earth. The only people that can stop them are a group of children that posess the power to control giant robots.

The manga revolves around the story of these children and a mysterious organization they are working for. What are the angels? What are they here for? These are some of the questions that are brought to question.

This closely follows the animation and was a thouroughly enjoyable volume.
