The Arrivals is the story of nine people who leave Chicago on a plane headed for Brussels. When the plane crashes in Lake Huron, the nine think they have survived. In fact they have not, but are in a world where each discovers what kind of choices he or she made while on Earth and the person he./she has become because of those choices. You really grow attached to these characters.

This is a prequel to Smith's novel, The Arrivals, and follows a group of Americans traveling in different part of Europe who happen to die on the same night. They awaken in a world between heaven and hell and join to explore it, following a map that seems to change just about every time they look at it. A good read.
