I’m on a bit of an EP sci-fi binge and am interested in CJ Cherryh’s books. Read and loved Downbelow Station and thinking of (hopefully slowly for my budget) acquiring the rest.

I was wondering if anyone has opinions on Heavy Time or the Rider series?

>1 RRCBS: So this is an old post, but I just joined this list a few weeks ago so am only now able to reply.

I loved Cherryh’s Downbelow Station and only read it because I was subscribed to EP’s MOSF series. I have read it 2 or 3 times. I have read I think all of the Alliance-Union novels except for the most recent one, The Hinder Stars. I need to pick that one up.

I did enjoy Heavy Time but not as much DS. Hellburner was also a fine read but again not as good as DS. Both HT and HB are interesting in that the plot slowly and methodically builds to a climax that then whips by you so fast as a page turner. I wondered if Cherryh was trying give the reader the experience of what it must be like for a spacer to have to live in a fixed position for an extended time rather than being constantly mobile?

In contrast, Merchanter’s Luck, Rimrunners, Tripoint and Finity’s End were very good reads. But for whatever reason, the novels set further in the future of this timeline (e.g. Cyteen, The Faded Sun) did not grab me as much. Not sure why.
