I love a book that starts out strong, with bodies dropping and villains reveling in their handiwork. I love a book with damaged characters that create a second chance for themselves and One Wrong Move by Dani Pettrey fits the bill.

Christian O’Brady is on a mountaintop, when he receives an urgent call. Tad Gaiman’s gallery has been robbed. I will say that I have nothing good to be said about Tad. He’s a dick, with a capital D!

Andi, an insurance adjuster and ex FBI, is called in. As soon as she stepped out of her vehicle, she felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise. The past never lets us go and it strikes when Andi least expects it. It leaves Christian with questions of his own, but he believes in his ability to read a person’s characters and he feels Andi is a stand up person, regardless of what his brother says.

Andi’s best friend Harper comes in like a bat out of hell. Hold on to your hats, because she is a force to be reckoned with. She’s not the least bit shy. I love Riley, Christian’s sister. She is one of my favorite characters. She is an observer. She can find anyone and help anyone disappear. She has me laughing and the part she plays in a reenactment made me laugh at loud.

“Great. I get to be the victim again.”

They are a very tight Christian family. The Christian element is not in your face.

I do see another romance sparking and love is blooming all over the desert. That’s the wonderful thing about a romantic suspense series, we have plenty of characters to get involved with and plenty of mystery to come.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of One Wrong Move by Dani Pettrey.

In One Wrong Move, Christian O’Brady is called in to help investigate a local gallery heist since he’s the one who installed the security system. A man with a rough childhood and a checkered past, Christian has turned his life around and is trying to help prevent crimes that he might have once committed himself. Andi Forester, an insurance investigator, is also on her way to investigate the heist. A former FBI forensics investigator, Andi is trying to rebuild her life after a scandal left her reputation in shambles. As the two team up to investigate the crime, it quickly becomes clear that this is much more than it first appeared. And trying to get to the bottom of things may turn deadly for Christian and Andi.

Like other Dani Pettrey books I’ve read, I found this book to be well-paced and full of action. There are multiple story lines involved which adds to the depth of the characters. Both Christian and Andi are likable characters, and they have great chemistry. The story has turns that the reader doesn’t see coming. One Wrong Move is also a faith-based story and a clean romance. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and remain a fan of Dani Pettrey’s work.

I loved all the action and suspense in this story. I could not get enough of Christian, Andi, Harper and Deckard. I enjoyed that there were two different stories. I loved the romance as these couples get to really know one another as they work together. I could not put down this book. I received a copy of the book from the publisher for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will. ( )

One insurance investigator, one FBI agent, four private investigators, and two cases to solve make for an intense read. While two too-quick romances don't always add up, in this case they are not greater than the suspense so the reading pleasure is not decreased. Bullets are flying everywhere, riddles are dropped as clues, and the investigators travel by land, air, and sea. There is non-stop action as the investigators divide to conquer. Themes of dealing with one's past and forgiving those who caused much grief, even if one of those people is oneself is well-developed. Readers see the contrast between bitterness allowed to take root and becoming a new creature in Christ.

I highly recommend One Wrong Move to fans of romantic suspense. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own. ( )

I have enjoyed novels by Dani Pettrey in the past and was excited to read One Wrong Move, but I quickly realized that this read was going to be a challenge for me.

The constant switch from narrator to narrator paired with the short chapters, gave me literary whiplash. There are two cases being worked simultaneously, plus the villain's perspectives are thrown into the mix from time to time. I was not able to read this novel in one sitting due to time restraints and hoping in and out made me more confused and continued to distance me from the narrative to the point that I debated finishing it altogether.

The characters are great but the constant switching between points of view was frustrating because I couldn’t keep all of the characters straight and prevented me from really connecting. It was too much happening at one time, and I found myself more frustrated than endeared.

The overall romance was sweet, even if it did feel rushed, especially at the beginning, but even this, along with the Christian themes, did not redeem it for me. I really wanted to love this novel, but it just wasn’t a winner.

*I have reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the publisher through NetGalley. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own. ( )
