This series is disturbingly addictive. Frustratingly so. I can't figure out what genre I would place it in...I NEVER read fiction about religion or God...non-fiction, yes...But not fiction. I love the conflicts, the characters, the plots...I love the intrigue and I especially love that the characters are so deeply flawed but so deeply grand. Some of the language is positively poetic. The torture scenes are some of the gnarliest I've read in a long time...maybe ever. I actually don't even want to keep reading these books but I can't stop. They are well worth a look if you like secret societies bent on being God's executioners, kinky romance and yes..super powers.… (més)

This was one of the best books I have read in a long time (within this genre, of course). This story is different. Even though there is a supernatural flavor the God figure is hardly benevolent. It does not STOP with the action but it is not filler, there is a reason for every event. The author created visually stunning characters who are well rounded and interesting. The world building is awesome...I keep hoping that Aaron will run into Dresden...Too much to hope for? A short story is called for! For some reason I keep thinking of John Rain and Day by Day even thought here are no zombies or international operatives besides the CIA. If you love Angel and Louis in Connolly's world or Buffy or Sam and Dean in Supernatural then you'll fall in love with Marina and Aaron. This is a book with an angry God, crazy assassins and thought provoking situations. In this series God is an interesting character and while the other characters in the book are driven to "please" him they do it in exceedingly fun ways.… (més)

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. Aaron Glade was hired by Mr. and Mrs. Waters to kidnap their daughter Brittany from a cult called The Church of One Soul. Although he feels it’s an impossible task, he takes the job because it’s the first exciting job he’s had since he left the police force. Unbeknownst to him, it’s the beginning of a life changing encounter with the Gray Spear Society. There he meets, three of the most deadly people he has ever seen; the drop dead gorgeous Marina, the huge hulking Victor, and the very agile fighting Ethel. These three, along with computer geek Edward, and of course Aaron, become a force to be reckoned with.

This was a fascinating book. I was quite surprised when I realized that it wasn’t a dystopian novel, even the cover looks it. But you understand why as you get into the novel. This was quite a fast-paced, page turning thriller, filled with action, adventure, and romance. This is an amazing good versus evil novel, if you like x-men or characters with supernatural powers, you’ll LOVE this book as much I did!

I love the concept for this book. Two souls from heaven and two souls from hell, sent back to earth to work together in finding an escaped demonic soul, is a story full of intriguing possibilities. We explore some controversial and thought-provoking topics, mostly with humor, and never with preaching. The author doesn't stand on one side or the other and never interferes, instead letting the characters make the statements and ask the questions in their own way.

Despite my love for the concept, I don't share the overall love of the book that most reviewers have expressed. For me, the execution of the story doesn't quite live up to the greatness of the concept.

I have mixed feelings on the characters. Some of them are well developed and a lot of fun, with Virgil and Arthur being the standouts. The female characters mostly annoyed me with their childishness. This is especially true of Mei, a character that plays a big role in helping Virgil. Their interactions felt beyond ridiculous to me. And the dialogue between all of the characters often felt contrived and too similar.

The other aspect that bugged me was how characters moved in and out of the scenes with precision. Someone would appear when needed, a conversation would ensue sticking precisely to the topic, then the extra person or people would take their leave. No lingering, and no further curiosity was expressed.

I am, perhaps, a picky reader. As I mentioned, this is an intriguing concept and certainly will be a fun story for many readers. My favorite part is the question this book leaves us with regarding eternal damnation. What about redemption, the characters ask. You might close this book with that same question in mind.
