BookMooch has certainly been a great motivator for reading and giving away books I don't want to keep. Since 2007 I've read 109 books I own (at the time of this post), but have read a lot more I don't own, including public library books and secondhand books given away either via BookMooch or to charity shops. I noted it on my profile to keep a record but have not stated which books listed on LT I've read, since some I only browsed but did not count in that number. (Does anyone look at those 'books read in ...' collections or do people just tag them for their own personal interest? I just make a list offline.) Books read in 2010 might seem large but there were a bunch of picture books in there, however a lot of novels too. I really need to read more books I own as there's too many!
Year – Number of books read
2010 – 269
2009 – 172
2008 – 110
2007 –140
I don't know how many I'll read in 2011, but as many as I can. I was just curious how many others read last year? I didn't keep a numbered list before 2007, but often wrote down what I read, which helped when constructing the 'read but unowned' list. Sadly I didn't do that in my teens or younger as I know, for example, that I read a few Fear Street books by R.L. Stine but forget what they were. So I relied on my memory for most of those recalled.

2008 - 100

I didn't keep count before 2005. I do not count books I read to my children or books that I did not finish. I do count graphic novels but not single comic books that I might read. I had my first child in 2007 which accounts for the decline there. Then I had my second child in 2009. In 2010 they were both running around and requiring a lot of attention (bad babies! :-D )
I always like to stay around 100. This past year I also spent waayyyyy too much time on BM looking for books and on LT talking about books rather than actually reading books. I need to work on that this year I guess.

I've no idea, really - I mark dates but I don't collect what I've read by year. I could figure it out...but I'm feeling lazy. The only info I can offer is that I did the 100 Book Challenge for 2007 starting in July, I think, and had gotten up to 130+ before the end of the year. I read a _lot_.
Oh, bah. Very rough guide, completely ignoring rereads:
sorting books by Started, displaying 100 books per page.
2010: 2.75 pages - 279 books (few enough overlap that I counted)
2009: 3.25 pages - 317 books (few enough overlap that I counted)
2008: 2.5 pages - about 250 books (NOT counting half a page for precise numbers...)
2007: 1.5 pages starting from July 1 - about 150 books

I also feel LT has a positive effect on the number of books I read (more!)
2010: 125 books = 27,606 pp. average: 220 pp.
2009: 84 books = 20,136 pp average: 239 pp.
2008: 50
2007: 34 (LT: spent too much time on LT)
2006: 78
2005: 35 (not completely entered)
Prior to that annual averages between 35 and 70).
For 2011 my goal is 150 - 200. (For 2010 my goal was 100.)

Counting by year is easy if you use the 'Stopped' field:
2010: 82
2009: 95
2008: 70
2007: 37
Bookmooch probably contributed a fair few of those numbers but tend to stay in my TBR pile longer while I juggle library borrowing times. I've recently started reading ebooks and audiobooks which will probably increase my count.

Rereads make counting by Started or Stopped more difficult, since they don't (currently) show up anywhere but the edit page. Quite a few of mine are overlaps - that is, I read it in 2009 or 2008 and read it again in 2010. But they only 'count' in 2010.
7bookel
No I've never used the started/stopped fields as it would be inaccurate. I tend to mark books 'read but unowned', especially public library books, when I've edited the bibliographic details to my satisfaction and am partway through or just beginning the book, knowing I will finish it (got to do it when I have time online, not when I don't). Some are in 'currently reading' for ages simply because I get distracted by other books before finishing (especially public library books that demand a due date). I gave up on not borrowing public library books... it doesn't work! Oh yeah, I definitely want to reread books I own. Some of them many times, and they will count in my end of year tallies.

I use tags to tell me what I read - So
2009: 132
2010: 130 (plus a few books that I need to finish up)
Before that, I didn't keep track :)

2008: 58 (year I joined LT)
2009: 46
2010: 50
In 09 and 10, our vacations were more sightseeing oriented instead of relaxation oriented, hence the fewer books read in those 2 years. Hopefully, once I retire the #s will go up.

My numbers are low, but go back to 2004:

The numbers above only include completely read books. 2006 & 2007 I was teaching in Japan, with less access to books I could read all the way through.

I have included books bridged across years in the year I started them; there are never more than 2 of these, so it makes little difference. A small number of books are unfinished, but included in my list as I read a reasonable enough portion of them to form a view (i.e. not just abandoned after a few pages).
The low figures in the early 2000s are because I was studying for a degree in the evenings while working full time, so I only read for pleasure during holidays. I stopped studying in June 2005 and only 3 of my books for that year precede that time.
I certainly read more since I joined LT in 2006 and especially since I started reading more than one book at once in late 2006.
This is far more fun than it should be and another distraction from actually reading;)

What a good idea! I only have good records this year, and partial records for last year:
2009: 61
2010: 124
So pretty much double!

#12: sorry to be a pendant, but I think you mean you have partial records for the year before last & good records for last year!!
(I know I'm terrible!)
(and I don't keep those records.... which is either good or bad depending on how you look at it.)

I don't really track how many books I read in a year. Although I added 993 books to my LibraryThing collection last year, and my tbr pile hovers around 350 at any one point in time.
No matter which way I try to justify things, it's scary. I really should slow down this year....

I don't track how many books I read in a year, when I read each book, etc etc. However, I know for a fact that my reading has declined this past year, because of life issues and depression. According to my LT stats, I added roughly 200 books to my catalogue this past year, but I'm not sure that means much...
I'd say I probably read about 100 books this past year, give or take a bit. Most were YA/short-ish, I think I can count on one hand the number of books I read in 2010 that were over 400 pages.

I add a tag with the year as I update LT on completing a book so even though I'm much lower than others posting I know I've gone as follows:
2008 - 16
2009 - 31
2010 - 37
with the increase attributable to a switch from private to public transport in 2009.

I don't keep track of all the books I've read each year but the totals are probably closer to Moniica's and John's than earlier posters. I have 28 marked as "stopped" in 2010 but I suspect that number is incomplete.
#20 - Moniica studying is a great excuse! Mine is being a single working mom. I consider myself lucky to be able to sit down with a book at any time other than the weekends!

Wow -some of the numbers posted here are absolutely crazy! I think I read more than almost everyone I know, and my numbers are low compared to most of you guys.

I suppose it's all relative to what we all spend our time doing and just shows how different all our lives are!

One of my resolutions is to keep better track of the books I read in 2011! I'm bad at noting the dates of when I finish reading things on LibraryThing, but I've recently dipped a toe into the GoodReads pool, and I find it's very nice for keeping track of what I'm currently reading and the books I've read in a particular time frame.

Just as an addition to my Message #2, I decided to count how many books I had added to LT in 2010. It looks to be about 460 (thank you, Bookmooch). When you compare that to the 91 one books I read, I guess you could see where my husband might need to be worried about sitting space soon.

Thanks to the challenge threads on the Romance group I know how many books I've read a year for the last few years -
2008 - 124
2009 - 136
2010 - 63
I did not include manga or children's books, although I did include young adult books and audiobooks.
This year was a huge change for me which is why the number dropped so much. For 2011 I'm aiming for 66.
Much of my current TBR stack is made up of Bookmooched books. I plan to try and work through these as much as I can over the next year. I am participating in the 11 in 2011 challenge (I think that's what it is called) and decided on a step challenge so I don't overwhelm myself which is why I ended up with such a strange number for my goal.

I started keeping track in 2008 thanks to this lovely graph I stole from fyrefly98 .
My numbers are:
2010: 111
2009: 136
2008: 140
I blame the decline on the fact that I have suddenly become popular and people keep making me go do things instead of leaving me alone to read. I'm not kidding, and it kind of makes me sad.

That's hysterical, and I do understand why it makes you sad!! People are always asking me "Why are you sitting there all alone reading a book instead of doing something?" Like it's a fate worse than death!
*departs shaking head and chuckling*

>25 Belladonna1975: My incoming books also have nothing whatever to do with the number that I read this year - I don't even want to look because then I'll have to admit to myself that I have more than a lifetime's worth of books and there are still more that I want to read!
My numbers are:
Pre 2007 - merely a handful each year. I started doing the 50 book challenges because I wanted to get re-used to reading. (Well, fiction novels in English, anyway. I had been reading manga, the occasional nerd book, and some fanfic in the interim.) You can lose the knack, I discovered, but at least it's like riding a bicycle and with a little determination you can get back into things.
2008: 61 - Goal: 50. Did not allow myself to read any manga, short story anthologies, nerd stuff, or rereads -- it was like homework, but I did it. I tried to branch out into other genres, but it almost backfired entirely. By June I let myself read comfort genres and it became easier.)
2009: 74 - Goal: 50. Anthologies allowed. Nerd stuff still not allowed. Manga & rereads on a very limited basis)
2010: 150 - Goal: 75. Everything allowed. But I did keep track of manga separately because it inflated my numbers a bit (79 without manga) but I did it!
2011: 0 so far but this year I don't have a goal. I'm reading again and I don't need to monitor myself to keep it that way :) I expect the number will drop, but now that I know I could read 75 if I wanted to, I'm good.
Good luck to anyone else trying to reach a reading goal this year!
