This book is for art market researchers at all levels. A brief overview of the global art market and its major stakeholders precedes an analysis of the various sales venues (auction, commercial gallery, etc.). Library research skills are reviewed, and advanced methods are explored in a chapter devoted to basic market research. Because the monetary value of artwork cannot be established without reference to the aesthetic qualities and art historical significance of our subject works, two substantial chapters detail the processes involved in researching and documenting the fine and decorative ar… (més)

I received this book from Early Reviewers, and glanced through it. To my chagrin, I realized I shouldn't have requested it, as it doesn't have anything to do with me. However, I imagine it's a useful reference tool, and someday I may be glad to have it. Cheers. ( )

This is an excellent reference guide to everything related to the art world including collections, appraisal and marketing. As a librarian I would recommend this book to patrons wanting a thorough and complete guide. As a former art history major I found it interesting just to flip through.

This is a reference book, and it is literally packed with resources for serious art collectors. I think the initial target market for the book is art collectors or historians. If you've decided to start an art collection but aren't sure how to verify authenticity or locate information, this would be the perfect resource to get you started and answer your questions. The book is thorough and well organized.

However, I see two additional markets for this book:
If you're a fine artist you may find the resources helpful as you market you work. The first two chapters are particularly useful in identifying reputable websites where artists can sell their pieces or get exposure.

The second market (although much smaller), is authors seeking to write a work of fiction that takes place in the art world. This book would be a great resource and a good starting point to help you locate other experts for doing the background research on the market you're writing about. ( )

This is an updated version of the 2006 first edition. This is a combination textbook for library school and an overall reference to the field. Author Tom McNulty obviously knows his field and the true value of this work is the updating of available sources, both online and in print. The table of contents could be more detailed as each broad chapter is actually broken down into finer and more detailed sections. A small quibble: Appendix B: Apps for the Art Market Researcher should probably be retitled "Apple iPad apps for the Art Market Researcher" as there is only a single mention of one app (Live Auctions) being available for Android - everything else is Apple, Apple, Apple.
