Outlander de Diana Gabaldon (1991)

  1. 204
Into the Wilderness de Sara Donati (pollywannabook)
pollywannabook: The closest thing to Outlander out there. Diana Gabaldon even lent out the character of Claire for a cameo in this book

The Winter Sea de Susanna Kearsley (Iudita)
  3. 40
The River of No Return de Bee Ridgway (redheadedali)

Wildfire at Midnight de Mary Stewart (LiddyGally)
LiddyGally: I recommend this book because the writing styles are in a similar vein rather than the stories being the same. Both, however, are set in the wilds of Scotland.

El descobriment de les bruixes de Deborah Harkness (Usuari anònim, SunnySD)
  8. 41
The Bronze Horseman de Paullina Simons (littlebear514)

    Overseas de Beatriz Williams (becksdakex)
    becksdakex: Romance and time travel.
  10. 10
The Legend of Lady MacLaoch de Becky Banks (elbakerone)
elbakerone: Though Banks' novel is set in present day (and is considerably shorter), the love story with the gorgeous backdrop of Scotland was reminiscent of Gabaldon's series.

The Rose Garden de Susanna Kearsley (jennyj271)

I will say first that this book is not really what I expected, nor what I normally read. It tilted much more heavily towards romance than the historical fiction/fantasy that I tend to read. However, I found it a nice change of pace, and plan to continue reading the series. It's perfect for the Swiss train rides on which I really picked it up after only briefly starting it a month ago.

Gabaldon has an ability to write a slow paced story without making it seem dull or boring. Entire chapters devoted to life in a castle or the chapter at Lalybroch that could easily be boring ended up instead being quite interesting, and the overarching plot leaves you always wondering what will happen next. Recommended to those who are looking for a long series to jump in to, and who like to read tales, wherever they lead. ( )

This is the first time I read this series. I was a little confused at first but once I was into this book I could not put it down. The passion between Claire and Jaimie was captured so well by Diana. I started to feel like I was part of the story. I think by far this is the best love story I have ever read. Their passion for each other and the loyalty and respect they share for one another is something that is rare in today's society. I don't want to say too much with out giving the story away, but this book is full of passion, love, betrayal, lust, loyalty, family, gore, torchure and much more. Some partys made me cry while others made me smile. There were parts in this book that down right made me sick to my stomach.. But that is what makes a great book. If you can feel all of these emotions the brook is awesome and worthy for praise. I would recommend this read to anyone who either has or has not seen the series on starz. I am off to "Dragonflies in Amber" I hope it's as good as this one. ( )

It's not necessarily a /good/ book, but a very fun mixture of well-researched historical fiction, romance, fantasy and adventure. Had lots of fun reading this.
As a bonus, I think the inner voice of Claire is very... insightful. Gabaldon describes personal emotions, thoughts and feelings that I rarely find in books. You might think me pretentious for saying so, but those passages reminded me of War and Peace. Sorry. ( )

People disappear all the time. Ask any policeman. Better yet, ask a journalist. Disappearances are bread-and-butter to journalists.
Young girls run away from home. Young children stray from their parents and are never seen again. Housewives reach the end of their tether and take the grocery money and a taxi to the station. International financiers change their names and vanish into the smoke of imported cigars.
Many of the lost will be found, eventually, dead or alive. Disappearances, after all, have explanations.
Usually.
